Flab to Fab – Amanda B.’s Story

Please welcome Amanda! Amanda is a local area blogger (in my area) that I have just recently become acquainted with and I just love her! This story hits so close to home for me. While not everything is exactly what happened to me, it is so close to my story and it just breaks my heart. I remember being that girl. I remember being teased. Please give Amanda your support.

I remember the first time I ever had my first moment of ‘disordered eating’. I was in second grade, and my family had just moved. I was more than halfway through the school year and not feeling terribly accepted at my new school. I recall my dad going to take a shower and my mom at work, and me sneaking a Little Debbie snack from the cupboard. I can’t remember why I didn’t just ask for one. I guess maybe I thought I would be turned down because I had just had a meal.

It is clear from my childhood pictures that this truly does mark the beginning of my eating problems. That year, my school picture portrays me as a heavy set girl. The following school year, I started at a different school. I don’t really remember any further teasing until I was in fifth grade, running half heartedly in gym class, being called “Mount Fuji” by one of my classmates. By seventh grade I had sworn off fast food and by eighth grade I was wearing away the grass around the perimeter of our one acre yard by running every night.

I believe by high school I had really started to do radical things to lose weight. I would avoid breakfast and eat half of a soft pretzel for lunch. I was still running on top of it, and at some point, my menstrual cycle stopped. I had days where I couldn’t stand how hungry I felt and would binge on peanut butter or ice cream. I recall that at some point I tried to purge what I ate, but lucky (if you can call it that) for me, I could never pull it off.

I reached a peak of weight my sophomore year, and then started walking on our treadmill every night my junior year. That, combined with working a part time job many nights of the week, kept me busy and my weight stayed pretty steady. I graduated from high school a size 12, and although I’m sure I had moments of wishing I was smaller, I think I was at least OK with my body.

In 2002, my fiancé, Jon, (who is now my husband) and I broke off our engagement and I moved out on my own. Then, in 2003, Jon was shipped off to Kuwait during the beginning of the war with his fellow Marines. Struck with sadness, stressed about his well-being, and trying to make ends meet as an adult out on her own for the first time, I ate. And ate. And ate. And drank some too. Slowly, slowly, the scale went up and my thighs rubbed together a little more. I didn’t feel good about myself, but I had food to drown out my feelings.

Jon had left in March and in September I had found out that he would be coming home soon. We had many conversations about getting back together, and I certainly did not want him coming home to see me at my highest weight ever. So, I went low carb. I lost 8 pounds and then I get tired of pork rinds and cheese (well, I mean, a girl never TRULY gets tired of cheese, but you know what I mean). In the Spring of 2004, I joined a gym and Weight Watchers with my friend.
I lost 23 pounds for a total loss of 31 pounds. I felt awesome. I was a size 6, a size I had never been in my life. I was exercising five days a week. I thought I had attained a healthy weight that I would be able to maintain for life.

SNORT.

I slowly gained. Then I lost weight again in 2008 using sparkpeople.com. Then I had trouble getting pregnant and gained the weight back. Got pregnant. Gained even more weight. Had the baby. Was 10 pounds away from my pre-pregnancy weight. Gained 10 pounds back.

And so, here I am. At my heaviest weight of my adulthood. In pondering my weight up’s and down’s, it has occurred to me that, if I lose weight again, this will be the third time in a decade that I have lost twenty pounds or more. And, while I float around on the internet all day reading about “curve acceptance” and loving your body, I have to tell you that I certainly don’t hate my body. It is strong and has made a beautiful baby, which I delivered sans pain meds. That gym membership that I obtained in 2004? I still have it and use it. The longest I’ve gone without exercising in the eight years that I’ve belonged to a gym was the 2.5 weeks after I delivered our daughter, and I’m awfully proud of that.

What I am not proud of is how my weight has impacted my stamina during the day and how, even though I do not have the self-hatred that I had as a teen, I call myself “fat” when I am tired and my jeans don’t fit. I certainly don’t want my daughter to grow up hearing those words. Nor do I want her to see me scarfing down the bag of chocolate chips when I’m upset. I want her to see my running in 5k’s, exercising at the gym, and having a healthy attitude about food, rather than using it as my emotion drowning drug.

Perhaps that is why I can’t face the scale this time around. All the other times that I have lost weight, I have been obsessive about weighing myself. This time? I just can’t look at it. I think part of it is that I’m losing inches but not the several pounds that I’m used to seeing when I start changing my eating habits. But I think another part of it is that I just can’t go through the self torture anymore. I either feel better or I don’t. I make good eating choices or not. I’m hoping that with the support I have with the Flab to Fit girls and with logging my food choices on sparkpeople.com that I can eat better, feel better, and be the best example to my daughter that I can be.

Flab To Fab – Lyndsey’s Story

I am so excited to introduce Lyndsey to you today. Lyndsey and I go way back. And when I say way back, I mean we went to grade school, junior high and high school together. I have known her since 5th grade. Lyndsey’s story is one that I am sure that a lot of you can sympathize with. Many 0f you may even have the same story. Please welcome Lyndsey and give her your support.

I have been writing this post in my head ever since I volunteered to do it. Going over the past six years trying to figure out how I got to this point. All along I thought I had pretty valid reasons but when I really took a good, hard look all I came up with were a lot of excuses. It’s time to stop making excuses and make a change. Thanks to the Random Blogette and Babe’s Rockin’ Mami starting the group Flab to Fab, I finally am able to face all of those excuses and have the support to make it happen. So, here I am, facing it head on.
I was always pretty content with my weight. Yes, I had days where I would look in the mirror and think I was fat or wish my thighs were smaller. Looking back on those days makes me laugh. And then want to cry. What I wouldn’t give to be that size. I would never complain about my weight ever again. When I met my husband I was the absolute happiest with my weight. I was eating pretty well, not drinking soda, and using my treadmill on a regular basis. I was also bartending and waiting tables so I was always on the move. Ours was a whirlwind romance. We met, we fell in love, we moved in together all in 3 months. That’s when the trouble began. Justin is a fantastic baker. I went from buying ice cream and letting it sit until it was freezer burned to brownies and cake and ice cream just because. I blame him for contributing to my weight gain. Blaming him makes me feel better. Sadly, it makes me feel better like a hot fudge brownie sundae makes me feel better. At first it makes everything okay but then I just feel worse.

Fast forward a year, we’re getting married and still eating dessert. I also had a new job working at a mortgage company, sitting on my butt 50 hours a week with my treadmill being stored in the basement for safe keeping. I had already gained some weight but was enjoying my newly married status so I didn’t mind. Then I got pregnant. I made the excuse that I was eating for two. I ended up having a miscarriage and that was really hard to deal with so my eating habits didn’t change. I was up 30lbs. In 2008 I got pregnant again and this time it stuck. Even though I had morning sickness the entire time I still managed to pack on the pounds. At my heaviest I was 240…100lbs up from what I weighed in 2006 when I met my husband. After Austin was born in 09 I was a little more active and, somehow, had gotten used to my weight. I was at 220 but had a beautiful baby boy and a fantastic husband who told me I was beautiful and not at all fat. I guess I also figured we were going to have another baby eventually so why worry about it? I would just get fat again. (Worst excuse ever!) We had stopped eating dessert as often at least but then I got pregnant again. This time I was not sick at all and craved sugar all the time so we went back to desserts. I had another miscarriage, though, and my weight stayed about the same. By the time I got pregnant with Grant I was at 217. Even though I felt like I was eating all of the time while I was pregnant I actually ended up losing weight for awhile and then not gaining too much. When Grant was born in Sept. I’m not sure what I weighed. I hadn’t really been paying attention to the number just if I had gained or lost. I do know that I was up though. I even had a nurse in the hospital tell me the day that I delivered that my stomach didn’t look like it could stretch any further.

When I went to the doctor in December I weighed 205. It was just what I needed to hear. I had lost the pregnancy weight plus 12lbs. I was so close to being under 200 that I was motivated to make a change. I need to make the change for my sons. Austin is such a crazy nut with so much energy and I’m sure Grant will be the same. I’m going to have to have as much energy as possible to keep up with them and that’s not going to happen at 205. I also need to do this for Justin. Well, not for him exactly. He still says I’m not fat and that I just had a baby so it’s to be expected. I need to do it for him in the sense that I will feel better about myself and that will make things better for us. Above all else, I need to make this change for me. I’m tired of being embarrassed and ashamed. I’m tired of how it makes me feel. The majority of the time I am so happy. I know I should be. My husband is great. My boys are the best. I am fortunate enough to get to stay at home with them. Every now and then though, I remember what I really look like and it’s like a black cloud settles in over our whole house. It’s not good for any of us. So, with the help of this group and My Fitness Pal I am working on it. I’ll be doing my first 5k in April and plan to do more. I want to set a good example for my family and be able to fit a pair of tall boots over my calves while I’m doing it.

Thank you so much for sharing your story Lyndsey!  If anyone is interested in joining Flab to Fab with The Random Blogette and Babe’s Rockin’ Mami please join! We welcome anyone! If you are interested in sharing your story please let us know. We are here to support you.

Flab To Fab – 5 Fitness & Weight Loss Apps

When I started trying to lose weight I wanted something that could easily help me keep track of my calories consumed and possibly even give me some tips on working out or even just track my workouts. I am pretty scatter-brained most of the time. (Shocking, I know.) So to have a program that could help me track what I ate and had tools to assist with my weight loss would be such a big help.

Weight Watchers was the program that I initially chose to help me achieve my weight loss goal. I don’t have time to go to meetings, so I chose to do Weight Watchers online. It was such an easy way to track what I was eating and how many “points” I had consumed for the day. I was also able to track my exercise. The online community is great and very supportive. There are even tons of recipes with a wide variety of “points” to fit into anyone’s program.

My biggest issue was that I was sick of paying $15-$20 a month. I stopped doing it for a few months, but then had to start paying again to get myself back on track. I also decided that my new goal (along with weight loss) was to find a cheaper or free way to help me achieve my goal.

Now don’t get me wrong, I think that Weight Watchers is an AMAZING program. It really helped me pay attention to what I was eating and showed me how exercise really does help! I also learned that water is a much needed resource when you are trying to get healthy and lose weight. I am just poor and I can’t afford to keep paying for WW when I know that there is something cheaper out there.

One of my good blog friends told me about My Fitness Pal. I was a little skeptical at first. It is free, of course, but could it really help me the way that WW did? Why, yes it can!

I LOVE My Fitness Pal. It has a huge database with hundreds of restaurants and just about any type of food that you could possibly imagine in their food database. If you install the app on your Android phone or iPhone it even has a barcode scanner! SO easy!

It is perfect for me and my busy life. Dave has even installed it on his phone. He loves running around and scanning the packages of food and even his beers. Yes, you can still drink beer when you are dieting. Everything in moderation!

There is even a great sense of community on My Fitness Pal. You can friend people, like on Facebook and they can cheer you on throughout your journey. MFP will tell everyone if you haven’t been on for a few days. Kind of like a tattle tale, but they encourage you to give the missing person some encouragement. Everyone needs a little encouragement from time to time.

As you can tell, I am a big fan of My Fitness Pal. I do know that not everyone will like MFP. Each person is looking for something different in their journeys. Some people just want to find an app that will help them with fitness and not focus so much on the calories. Others really want all the help that they can get. I have scoured the interwebz and asked around to find you some of the top weight loss and fitness apps.

Don’t forget to stop by Steph’s blog for Ange’s story. It was the hardest thing that she has ever written. I am so proud of everyone that is sharing their story!

From Flab To Fab

Before I go into today’s post I want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart for all of the amazingly encouraging comments regarding my weight loss transformation. Seriously, you are all an amazing group of people.

Now on to the fun stuff. Due to the overwhelming support regarding my weight loss I decided that I needed to do something. Something big, but I had no idea what to do. I got a private Facebook message from my friend Jen who is also one of my partners from The Social Parent Network. She suggested that I do a weight loss challenge on the blog.

Perfect.

I then posted something on both my personal Facebook page and my fan page asking if anyone was interested. Apparently Jen wasn’t the only one that was interested in it! I received quite a response. Then, Steph and I were texting and we decided to co-host it. I can’t do this by myself!

As of right now we have started a private Facebook group so that anyone who wants to be involved can feel free to talk about their weight loss without any creepers and without any judgement. We already have 40 members! This challenge is for everyone. You do not have to be a blogger to be involved. You just have to have the desire to get healthy and not pass judgement on anyone that is opening up and sharing their story.

Each Friday Steph and I are going to showcase one challenger on one of our blogs. The blog that is not showcasing a challenger will post tips, tricks, etc. on how to get healthy and lose weight. We want to give everyone as much support as Steph and I have been receiving.

We are really excited about this project. We really hope to get some sponsors as well to give everyone some incentive. So, sponsors…contact us!

We are planning on having this go for an entire year! Are you in?

More details to come!
