All Eyes On Me

There I was standing on the stage, alone. (Ok, Paige was with me but she was off in another world.) I could feel hundreds of eyes staring back at me. This was the first time that I had ever done anything like this and I was terrified. I am not a public speaker. I was always the shy one when I was younger. I couldn’t be shy anymore. This was my moment. I couldn’t mess it up. I couldn’t let everyone down.

I put the microphone to my lips and then I saw him. My dad. My dad is a sap and a very emotional person. From up on my stage I could see the pride in his face and the tears welling in his eyes. At this moment he was so proud.

As soon as I saw him a lump appeared in my throat. I almost lost it. That pride on his face was something that you don’t get to see every day. Not to say that he is not proud of me, I am sure that he is…but at that moment…that moment it was something else.

I paused for a moment to collect myself. I put on my biggest smile and announced, “Hello everyone and welcome to the Toledo Baby Child and Family Expo!”

I did it! I actually did it. I MCed my first event and it was amazing. After a few minutes I got the hang of it. The thrill of being up on a stage; having everyone watch me and listen to my words (ok maybe not listen to everything but at least hear what I am saying). It is an amazing rush.

Other than standing on that stage, the best part of the event was meeting all of the amazing local vendors from the area. It is amazing what sort of products are available right in your backyard. I made some great connections with some amazing small business owners and I hope to be able to share them with you in the coming months.

Remember to spread local love in your own hometown. Do you support small businesses in your town?

*I also want to give a BIG THANK YOU to Dave for helping me out and being my runner that day. That meant the world to me! *

Stepping Out Of My Comfort Zone

This past Sunday I had the honor of MCing the Toledo Baby Child & Family Expo. I was terrified that I would fall flat on my face but the Expo Director had faith in me and if she believed in me, I knew that I could do it. And you know what? It was so much fun!

When was the last time that you stepped out of your comfort zone?

Living A Plant Strong Life

I am so happy to have Amanda from Tales of An Amateur Mommy here again today. Amanda has decided to live a plant strong (mostly meat free) life recently and it is so intriguing to me. Even though Dave would never let us go completely meat free in the house (he told me so, so yes I know he won’t let me do it) I am still very curious about it. I asked Amanda to talk about “living a plant strong life” with everyone today. Please welcome Amanda!

To continue with Jayme’s weekly toast to health, I’ve agreed to share with her followers (makes her sound like a goddess doesn’t it? You’re welcome, Jayme) my journey that has led to me eating a plant strong diet. By now, most of you are probably raising your eyebrows at me and wondering what in the world is a plant strong diet. Basically, I don’t eat meat (including fish), eggs, or dairy.

Wait a minute… then don’t I mean that I’m vegan??

No. No I don’t. I’ve learned from many vegan forums that it is pretty unacceptable to peg yourself as a vegan unless you eliminate ALL animal products from your life—that means leather shoes, coats, purses, belts, couches, car seats, etc, wool coats, honey… I could go on and on. Since I’ve become more educated and passionate about this topic, I’ve started working towards eliminating many of these things from my life, but I probably won’t ever be a total vegan for my own personal reasons.

My husband and I started down this path during Lent, when we decided to give up meat. We had started eating mostly vegetarian for health reasons right before I got pregnant with my daughter. When I found out that I was now responsible for the health and nutrition of another little being, I decided to give it up. I just didn’t have enough knowledge about vegetarianism and pregnancy to feel comfortable with it. However, during the brief time that I had eliminated meat, I felt a lot lighter and healthier.

Recalling that time is what made me suggest to my husband that we give up meat again. He agreed, so I decided to do some reading on it. I randomly picked up The Kind Diet by Alicia Silverstone, not knowing that this a book based on being vegan, not vegetarian. Many of her points made so much sense to me and she presented many examples of people not just feeling better by cutting out animal products but actually reversing disease and becoming stronger as well. I raved about all of the new information that I was learning to my husband, and he backed me up fully.

Now, before you start bashing me for not eating meat, eggs or dairy, hear me out. Not eating these things, especially if you concurrently cut out most sugar, will make you feel AMAZING. I have never, ever changed my eating habits in order to lose weight and not felt tired and headachy for at least the first week. On the other hand, a week after I stopped eating animals/animal products, I cleaned so much around our house that my cousin claimed that I must be pregnant and nesting. And I hate cleaning. But I had so much energy that it overflowed into completing domestic duties that I hate.

Eating plant strong is not a wonder cure to fix all your ills. I’m sure many of you know vegetarians or vegans that eat junk and a diet that is utterly unhealthy. You definitely cannot cut meat out of your meals and then stuff your face full of french fries and beer. It just doesn’t work that way. There are many vegan blogs that can be found with awesome, healthy vegan recipes and it’s important to make sure that you are still getting the right nutrition. Want to see some? Follow me on Pinterest (not all vegan boards, some are crafting and food porn).

Health is not the only reason to cut meat and animal products out of your diet. It’s also better for the environment and of course, better for the animals. While I personally believe that the consumption of animals used to be perfectly healthy and acceptable, many slaughterhouses are terribly inhumane and unsanitary. I would much rather eat a deer that my husband has shot than a chicken breast from our local grocery store because of this—not to mention the steroids and antibiotics that are stuffed into many livestock.

I should probably reiterate here that I’m not entirely 100% meat free. I don’t expect my family to make a vegetarian alternative for our Sunday dinners, and I still love fish and cheese (I never really liked red meat to begin with) so sometimes I do indulge. Often, I totally regret it and feel bloated and disgusting the next day. It’s incredible to me how my body responds now that I have stopped stuffing the wrong things into it.

Interested in learning more? I encourage you to do your own research into the benefits of eating a plant strong diet. Some of my favorite resources are:

Vegucated—a documentary on three New Yorkers that eat a vegan diet for six weeks. A very
comprehensive film on all the reasons to transition to a vegan diet.

Veganomicon by Isa Chandra Moskowitz—a terrific vegan cookbook. She also has a website,
Post Punk Kitchen.

Physician’s Committee for Responsible Medicine — “Since 1985, PCRM has been influencing advancements in medicine and science. We advocate for preventive medicine, especially good nutrition, conduct clinical research, and advocate for higher ethical standards in research.”

Better Late Than Never – St. Patrick’s Day!

Life has been so busy lately that I can barely keep up with what day it is. I was looking through photos to post for today and I realized that I never even posted about my trip to Chicago for St. Patrick’s Day weekend work. So here you go!

My hotel room was pimp! It was on the end and it even had a mini fridge. Too bad the fridge was empty but it was perfect for my Diet Coke and bottles of water. A girl needs to stay hydrated!

The river was green-ish by the time we got there.

We stopped for some AH-MAHZING Al’s #1 Italian Beef! As seen on Man vs Food!

A random bagpiper stopped into one of the bars we stopped at.

My one and only green beer!Did you know that if you checked into 4 or more bars in one night on Foursquare that you are awarded the “Get Crunked” Badge? Yeah me neither, but I got it!

We ended up eating dinner at Widfire at 9:30 at night. My first Beef Wellington was ah-mahzing and a little too rich for eating that late. It was so good though.

My stunnah shades!

Now the next two photos are not from that night but the next night we went to Twin Anchors which happened to be one of Frank Sinatra’s favorite bars/restaurants. They had amazing food and if my camera wasn’t being crappy and my phone wasn’t dead I would’ve had more photos. The stop sign was right outside of the restaurant.

It was one of those blink and you will miss it restaurants. They weren’t even open yet but the amazing bartender let us in anyways! I can’t wait to take Dave there and take more pictures.

I had way too much fun in Chicago and need to keep reminding myself that I am not 21 anymore. Just so you know, when you get a bunch of tech nerds together they LOVE to let lose. Don’t let them fool you.

What did you do for St. Patrick’s Day?

MC Jayme Is In The Hizzouse!

Guys, I am super duper excited about next Sunday. What is next Sunday you ask? Well, let me start from the beginning.

Last summer I met an amazing group of women. They have been in all aspects of social media and small business and I was honored to be a part of the group. One of the women that I met was Yiesha Beamon. This women is amazing y’all! (No. I am NOT Southern but I love using y’all. It makes me feel like Amanda.)

Yiesha is a very inspirational woman who has started The Humilty Project and is also the Expo Director for Toledo Baby. She also kind of likes me a bit and believes that some day I am going to make something of myself. She also thinks that I am hilarious. Due to the fact that she thinks that I am hilarious she offered me something that I could not turn down.

You guys.

This is big guys.

I am going to be the MC of The Toledo Baby Child & Family Expo this Sunday!

Not only am I going to be the MC, but Paige is going to be the Junior MC and will be my sidekick throughout the event. She will also be wearing this from Tanya’s Hats, Bows and More!

Seriously, I die! She is going to look so adorable. I just can’t wait.

This event is FREE! I know, it is hard to believe. The Toledo Baby Child & Family Expo is the area’s largest celebration of expecting parents and families with children of all ages. Toledo celebrates and promotes local businesses. They are all about local love.

I promise that this is not like a flea market. There will not be tons of vendors selling the same items. There will only be one of each business at the expo. The best of the best!

If you are near Toledo on Sunday, April 29th you CANNOT miss this event! See you there!!

GIVEAWAYS!

Plan Your Next Par-Tay With Farm Rich

When my husband and I were out looking for houses over 6 years ago the most important thing that we would look for in the house was if it was capable of handling a party with our large group of friends and abundance of family members. It didn’t take us long to find the perfect house (it just happened to be the first one that we saw) and we immediately started throwing parties. I am just like my mom in the fact that we love to throw lavish parties with tons of food.

The first thing that you need when you start planning a party is a killer menu. We always go all out no matter what type of party we are hosting. We always go overboard. I am usually stressed out and screaming at my husband and usually covered in hives by the time the party starts. I really need to find some shortcuts to make my parties less stressful.

My Daughter Told ME I Need To Exercise

I have been trolling along with my weight loss, making low-cal recipes and trying to “move” as much as possible. I even lost an extra 6 lbs during my 9 week weight loss challenge at work. I was so proud of myself that I was keeping up with everything. Then it stopped.

I started going back to my nightly snack attacks with Dave. He is not really helping the situation by buying me amazingly yummy pints of ice cream (yes even with my lactose intolerance I love ice cream – it is worth it). I am totally failing and I know it, but I am tired and ice cream makes me happy.

The other day Paige and I were standing in the kitchen making dinner and she looked up at me. “Mom, you really need to start exercising again!” she shouted.

I stopped and just looked down are her adorable little face and resisted the urge to drop kick her across the room looked at her perplexed and asked why in the world she would say such a thing. She replied, “Well mama you used to work out all of the time and you weren’t so tired.”

Image Source LMAO! I had to use this pic. I couldn’t resist.

Touche my little Peanut, touche. It was true. I had so much more energy and was not nearly a tired when I used to work out all of time. I think it is time to get back on track and stop being such a lazy ass. I know I keep saying that but when your little one throws it in your face then it is a big wake up call.I have stayed at exactly the same weight without exercising but I know that if I just workout a few times a week again I am going to feel so much better.

Later I found out that the real reason she wants me to start working out again is so that she could go to the YMCA again and hang out in the Kid Zone and go swimming in the pool. Whatever gets me going back to work out is fine with me.

Donate Life Ohio Digital Donor Designation Drive

Starting April 1, five cities from across Ohio – Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, Dayton and Toledo – will square off in a friendly competition in celebration of Donate Life Month to drive the most participation in the Donate Life Ohio Digital Donor Designation Drive via Facebook. When your Facebook friends arrive at the tab, they will be encouraged to do three things:

1. Check In. Visitors to the Facebook page will use voting buttons to Check In at the drive on behalf of your city:

The city with the most check ins on April 30 will be named the winner of the drive!

The check-in function also contains fields where users may enter to win a Donate Life Ohio t-shirt if your city wins the drive. Should your city be named the winning city, 50 of your participants will be mailed a free t-shirt.

2. Learn. Once participants have checked in, the tab contains educational information about what it means to be a registered organ and tissue donor, and how each registered donor has the potential to save 8 lives and enhance 50 more through donation.

3. Register. The final link on the page directs users to the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles’ secure online registry, where your members can easily and securely join the Ohio Donor Registry.

Make A Fashion Statement on Blue and Green Day

April 20 has been named Blue and Green Day by Donate Life America. On this day, supporters of organ, eye and tissue donation are encouraged to flaunt their blue and green looks – from shirts and pants to hats and nail polish. Participants can show off their blue and green attire by posting pictures on the Donate Life Ohio Facebook page throughout the month of April. On April 20, Donate Life Ohio will share some of its favorite blue and green photos with a new cover photo and selected participants will be awarded a Donate Life Ohio t-shirt.

Why we hope you’ll participate in this Facebook program with us:

·         More than 111,000 Americans are waiting for a life-saving organ transplant. More than 4,300 of them are from Ohio.

·         18 men, women, and children die each day in the U.S. because the necessary organs were not available to meet the need. Statistically, that is one Ohioan every other day that loses their life because a life-saving organ transplant did not come in time.

·         A single donor can save the lives of up to eight people and heal up to 50 more by donating vital organs (heart, two lungs, two kidneys, liver, pancreas and small bowel) and tissue (corneas, bone, fascia, skin, veins, nerves, tendons, ligaments and heart valves).

Student Of The Month – My Little Man

Jacob is a survivor and he has come so far in his life. I am so proud of him. I even more proud that he received Student of the Month again this year. Today we were able to celebrate this honor with him and even though the look on his face is less than enthused we know he was excited and we were so proud.
