There I was standing on the stage, alone. (Ok, Paige was with me but she was off in another world.) I could feel hundreds of eyes staring back at me. This was the first time that I had ever done anything like this and I was terrified. I am not a public speaker. I was always the shy one when I was younger. I couldn’t be shy anymore. This was my moment. I couldn’t mess it up. I couldn’t let everyone down.
I put the microphone to my lips and then I saw him. My dad. My dad is a sap and a very emotional person. From up on my stage I could see the pride in his face and the tears welling in his eyes. At this moment he was so proud.
As soon as I saw him a lump appeared in my throat. I almost lost it. That pride on his face was something that you don’t get to see every day. Not to say that he is not proud of me, I am sure that he is…but at that moment…that moment it was something else.
I paused for a moment to collect myself. I put on my biggest smile and announced, “Hello everyone and welcome to the Toledo Baby Child and Family Expo!”
I did it! I actually did it. I MCed my first event and it was amazing. After a few minutes I got the hang of it. The thrill of being up on a stage; having everyone watch me and listen to my words (ok maybe not listen to everything but at least hear what I am saying). It is an amazing rush.
Other than standing on that stage, the best part of the event was meeting all of the amazing local vendors from the area. It is amazing what sort of products are available right in your backyard. I made some great connections with some amazing small business owners and I hope to be able to share them with you in the coming months.
Remember to spread local love in your own hometown. Do you support small businesses in your town?
*I also want to give a BIG THANK YOU to Dave for helping me out and being my runner that day. That meant the world to me! *
